Learning the F-Chord(s) :)

I’d like to learn how to play California Dreamin’ by The Mama’s and the Papa’s. To do that, I’m going to have to learn the F chord. I’m currently working through Fender Play’s lessons on the F-chord and wanted to share this with everyone. The Fender Play lesson sequence has a lot more to it. There are exercises and song riffs to practice and learn to. I highly recommend trying out Fender Play if you’re a guitar player who is new to music.

Starting with the “Little” F Chord

Fender Play’s lesson sequence starts you with the “Little” F chord (Level 5, Course 05, Electric, Rock Genre), which seemed like a cheat when I started the lesson. Instead of continuing with the Fender Play lesson, I went to Justin Guitar and started learning the barre F lesson there. What I found was that after several days of practice, I was starting to get the barre F chord to sound out correctly. The problem was that, even after more practice with it, I was very slow at it. It was sounding better and better so slow that it wasn’t usable in songs.

I decided to go back to Fender Play’s F chord lesson sequence and exercises. It was a slow start in the beginning. After putting some serious effort into doing the lesson and practice, I got good enough to start doing little F chord transition practice. Little F is close to the C chord, and it makes transition practice much easier to practice and master.

Matt’s Fender Play lesson below is a “hidden” one. The video on Fender Play is different. It doesn’t teach the barre F. This one teaches both.

It’s going to take a while before I can tackle California Dreamin’. The F-chord(s) are one of the more difficult chords that I’ve tried to learn. I still practice the barre F along with my Little F chord practice. I’ll get it eventually. I’m keeping at it, and I hope this post will make it easier for you to master it faster than me.

I’ve added other F-chord YouTube videos and links in the Resources below. Check them out. If you have any suggestions or resources that have worked for you, put them in the comments below.
