Beginner Guitar Recommendations

Enya Nova Go Carbon Fiber 1/2 size Adult Travel Guitar is one of the non-traditional recommendations for the new beginner. Amazon is generally a bad place to buy guitars, but this is one case where I make an exception. Here are some of the good and bad things to consider about the Nova Go:

  • The Good:
    • Affordable: At about $189, the basic version of the Nova Go is one of the better starter acoustic guitars.
    • Size: the 1/2 size Nova Go is perfect for kids, smaller adults, and people with smaller hands.
    • Durable: Due to its carbon fiber construction, you don’t have the same worries about heat and cold warping your guitar. It comes with a case and handles travel well. It’s perfect for kids going to and from lessons.
  • The Bad
    • No left-handed version
    • Weaker Bass: as a smaller guitar, it won’t have the same bass qualities as the large dreadnaught guitars.

Yamaha F335 Dreadnaught Guitar – Yamaha is one of the most popular guitar manufacturers in the world. It’s also one of the most frequently recommended brands I see as a moderator on the Reddit r/guitar subreddit. Affordably priced, the Yamaha F335 should be one of the first guitars for you to consider.

  • The Good:
    • Affordable: At $189.99, it is one of the most affordable traditional wooden acoustics available.
    • Brand Reputation: Yamaha is a well-known, and highly trusted brand. Hard to go wrong with them
  • The Bad
    • Size: Dreadnaught size guitars are fairly large and can be more difficult for smaller adults and children to play comfortably.
    • No left-handed version – sorry, lefties are out of luck.

Fender CD-60S – Fender is the name in electric guitars, but they also make a popular line of affordable acoustics. If you care about the brand and a good quality starter acoustic guitar, it’s hard to miss with the Fender CD-60S.

  • The Good:
    • Affordable: At $199.99, the CD-60 just sneaks in under the $200 mark. Given it’s popularity, you can easily find used CD-60s just about anywhere.
    • Brand Reputation: Like Yamaha, Fender is one of the best-known guitar companies in the world.
    • Lefty Friendly: The CD-60S also has a lefty version so no one misses out
  • The Bad
    • Size: As with the Yamaha F335, dreadnaught guitars can be larger than is comfortable for smaller adults and children.
